Google Best Practices
October 5, 2007
Hello, class. Welcome to Science 101. Please open your textbooks to page 7 and we will begin. In Chapter 1, we will learn that there are two kinds of scientists. The first kind is the "Dangerously Egoistic Ineffectual Theory Pronouncer", or DEITP. Can anyone tell me why you should avoid this kind of scientist at all costs? No? Well, I see none of you have read today’s chapter. Pity.
DEITPs are scientists who run around to academic institutions talking about theories they thought up while experimenting with hallucinogens. They are charismatic, have a million dollar smile, and have never seen the inside of a real laboratory. Worst of all, the theories they subscribe to are not backed by the meekest inkling of empirical observation. That is to say, they do not test their theories and therefore have no proof.
The second kind of scientist is the Hyper Obsessed Experimenter, or HOE. These scientists are not charismatic, they are unkempt, and they are always in the laboratory testing their theories. Many days they go without sleep trying to find the Truth. They take nothing at face value, and an idea is only worth as much as the proof that backs it up.
So which type of Scientist would you want to help you study for your exam?
Gurus and other self-proclaimed know-it-alls dream up theories as to how to increase your Search Engine rankings, particularly with Google, since Google is cock of the walk on the internet. There’s only one problem, the gurus are like the DEITPs, don’t test their theories, so they don’t even know if they work! They are banking on the fact that since they have "Guru status" you’ll take their word for it. After all, it sounds like it would work.
With all the false prophets out there, claiming to have the latest secret to Search Engine Optimization, whispered to them from the lips of Google creator Matt Cutts himself over an intimate steak dinner in The Hamptons, it is impossible to know who to believe. That is, until I found the Good Book: Google Best Practices.
Google Best Practices was not only created with months of intensive testing and tweaking, but is continually updated as Google changes their practices. The theories that make up this 81-page "SEO Bible" have been tested for months by Hyper Obsessed Experimenters. They spend all day in the lab, isolating variables and testing them to come up with theories that are based on cold, hard facts. Numbers don’t lie. The best part is is that these crazy scientists at Google Best Practicesare always putting their theories to the test and updating the manual to make sure that what works today works tomorrow, and if it doesn’t they know what does.
So when it comes to which strategies to implement to drop-kick your site into the top rankings, you can feel comfortable that you’re doing the right thing with Google Best Practices. Don’t waste any more time chasing the latest, greatest white rabbit. Think about the long-term and start shooting up the rankings by using the scientific findings of Google Best Practices. After all, when it comes to exam time, who would you rather have in your corner?
Google Best Practices teaches the following and more:
- Is SEO Dead? "Gurus" who don’t understand SEO to begin with use this phrase. Their main objective is to sell you an inflated package of information you probably already know. Page 4.
- The Title Tag. Learn about this misunderstood weapon. Pages 26-34.
- Supplemental Index Is this the new Sandbox? Learn the Truth. Page 48. This section also contains the complete "Prescription" to get your pages out of the Supplemental Index. Page 51.
- Linking Structure How your current linking structure may be hurting your ranking right now. Page 35.
- Page Rank The real Importance of Page Rank and how it can affect your rankings. Page 38.
- Step-by-Step Web Development Learn the proper step-by-step of web development to ensure your site meets the criteria of Google. Included is choosing a domain name, web hosting, site design, site structure, page size, content creation, keyword research, etc. Pages 11-25.

Hi
I have no idea whatsoever what tis product is supposed to do. I’ve been online 14 years and I’ve never used SEO, meta tags or any other kind of tags and have no idea what they are for.
As for the podcast - assign it to the rubbish bin.
I am in the process of un-subscribing from every list that even mentions audio or video. Both annoying and both totally useless.

Jay Jennings is a P I M P! I say KEEP the Podcast. You might extend it on a longer, groovier backtrack but definitely keep it around

I like the podcast. The guy has a good voice. I also do voice overs professionally, so if he’s ever sick… :p

I’ve never heard of this author, but I’m a big fan of Perry Marshall’s Google writings. He covers Adwords as well as the more basic SEO stuff - it really changed how I did things for the better.

The podcast is a fantastic idea and a great asset to DDC. Whoever at DDC thought to add this great nugget to the daily offers needs to get a raise. BRAVO! Well done, irreverent, interesting and really adds to the whole flavor of the site. Keep it up DDC!

Jay nice podcast.
Clear and convincing.

As soon as you said, “Hello, class.” I started daydreaming about Snugglebutt and him in a wet DDC t-shirt. Then, suddenly, I was hit with a spitball.
Teacher, I saw the straw in ablake’s hand!
I guess I will go read chapter 7, I’m trying to be a good student.

Great podcast! Love your radio voice, Jay.
A few friends have told me that Jerry West really knows his stuff when it comes to SEO. Looks like I’ll have to pick this one up.
Keep the super deals coming!

Ooo…ooo…ooo, I just got excited, I know what meta tags are and how they help a search! God, I’m such a newbie (maybe a DDC geek wanna be).

Minor nit pick, but the product is called “Google Best Practices” and in the copy, it says “Google Best Strategies.” That can’t be very good for SEO now can it??

See? More proof I’m the only one who does any work around here. The code monkeys screw up the website, the copy slave screws up his copy, and I’m the one that has to fix it all…
Thanks for the heads up Jonathan!

I have read this guide. I have reviewed it on my site: http://cbwatcher.com/
Jerry knows his stuff.
Love the podcast. You had my laughing at the end with the G and 4… if you don’t get that you don’t have toddlers.

From day one I have always been impressed with the storytelling approach to your Sales-Pitches, refreshing…
First impression on the Podcast was:
Short (always good)
Professional (good radio voice and loved the musical lead-in/lead-outs)
Funny (I actually did LOL at the G and 4 reference.)
and Charles… (enjoyed and bookmarked your site BTW)
one may also get it if you were a 70’s toddler.
I say hire him, but mix it up with that sexy female your hiding in the back office. All us guys will like her too!
SHARE!!!

I like the podcast and the voice on it! I think you should keep him. the sales copy, the voice overs, everything about dealdotcom is just a little bit unworldly and that’s why it grows on you. this voice on the podcast is the same, never smart or brash, never annoying, calm but you know he gets excited, he just knows his place. after all I’m the customer. If anyone is going to get excited it should be me! KEEP HIM
October 5th, 2007 at 4:28 am
JD, thanks! I was just going to say I was a 70s adolescent and got the G to the 4 hook! You beat me to it! Charles must be a real youngin’! LOL J/K
I gotta give kudos to the telephone aliens… remember them??? Telephone, telephone…
Oh, and a PS to Snugglebutt, I remember a skill I have thanks to JD! I have a sexy voice (I did work at radio stations), I may be better at the sexy voice thing than the wet t-shirt contest, I’ve got the 30-something sag going on there!
See you need gals to work for DDC - even a cross dresser can’t always get the sultry female voice thing!

Hi, Since I haven’t read the book I can’t review its contents. However books like this, mostly just collect together what is publicly available in SEO forums and the Google help system.
You could put in the hours necessary to gather this information yourself, but like me you probably have n’t done so.
A Whois search shows that Goolgebestpratices.com belongs to http://www.webmarketingnow.com/ having looked at the information in their article database, I feel confident that $27 is probably good value for this book.
If it isnt I’ll be back to say so !

Great voice.
From one popular podcaster - to one who’s about to be great - well done.
Keep up the podcasts. Keep them short and sweet.
Keep them wanting more!

err… how out of date is this…
the supplemental index is dead, it no longer exists. maybe an update of the ebook before selling it too the masses.
Support Minion Sez:
The supplemental index is alive and well at Google. Google has removed your ability to tell whether a page is in the main index or in the supplemental index. Just because you can’t see it anymore doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. References:

I think the podcast is a great idea. Short and sweet. Hire the guy!!!

Hi, I’ve bought the book and just done a quick read.
If you know anthing about keywords and have read some SEO tips there will be a lot of material that is familiar to you. Not necessarily a bad thing tho.
What I liked about the style of presentation was that when he gives some advice it is generally justified by reference to his own tests. Thus you can decide whether the advice is relevant to your situation.
The last section of the book is a summary of a discussion with Google which helps to give an insight to their thinking.
Overall I feel the book is worth the Dealdotcom price , (I have a maximum price of $30 for ‘take a chance and see’ purchases) however I dont think the content, good though it is, can really justify the standard $47 price.

I think the podcast is a great idea. It keeps me from having to read the long description. I get drowsy reading. LOL

Suggest you have the Podcast load in a separate window.
e.g.
I was happily listening & a Google Adsense ad caught my eye.
Clicked it & boom, the podcasts gone.
I assume you’d like us to listen AND earn you a bit of extra Adsense income?

The podcast is wonderful. The guy does have that ‘radio’ voice. I like listening to it while I skimmed the long written description of the product. I say, keep the podcast.

Jay’s podcast was awesome! Great addition to the site.
The copy was great and the ending was priceless!
Hope you’re going to keep Jay around. He’s a real asset.
